Developmental milestones are important tools for caregivers. They can help you figure out what to expect from the children in your care and help you identify children who may have special needs. But never forget that they are only a guideline. Children can vary greatly in the ages at which they reach a milestone. What is less likely to vary is the order in which children move through these milestones.
We know every child is different. What we need to remember is that every child will develop at his or her own pace. Do not rush children. Infants want and need to perfect each new skill that they discover. For example, an infant will need to stand and push against the ground or your lap with his legs over and over again to build the muscles he needs to stand on his own and eventually walk. Rather than trying to âwalkâ a baby who is just starting to try to stand, encourage her attempts at standing. Give her plenty of opportunities to practice. Resist the temptation to âhelpâ babies by forcing them into new skills. For instance, placing a baby in a nest of pillows to âhelpâ her sit up does not encourage her to develop the muscles she needs to sit upright herself, and it deprives her of the opportunity to learn how to get into a sitting position on her own.
Here are brief descriptions of developmental skills typical of infants (birthâ18 months) as well as milestone charts divided into the developmental areas of fine motor, gross motor, language, and social and emotional skills.
